Origin, spread, and cultivation history of the peach (Prunus persica L.)

Peach (Prunus persica L.) is one of the most important temperate fruit crops in the world and is widely recognized as having originated in China. Drawing upon a multidisciplinary approach that integrates textual analysis of historical records with archaeobotanical evidence, this study systematically reconstructs the origin, early domestication, global dissemination pathways, and cultivation history of the peach. By situating the movement of peach within broader frameworks of transregional exchange, cultural interaction, and agricultural adaptation, the paper aims to clarify longstanding debates regarding its diffusion routes and to highlight its role as both a biological and cultural agent in premodern globalization. Archaeobotanical data indicate that peach exploitation in China can be traced back to the Neolithic period, with charred peach pits unearthed from sites associated with the Yangshao culture (ca. 6200-5800 BP), demonstrating its early incorporation into subsistence systems. These remains suggest that the peach was initially gathered as a wild resource and gradually entered a domestication trajectory characterized by morphological selection and increasing human intervention. By the pre-Qin and QinHan periods, textual sources confirm that the peach had become a well- established cultivated fruit, widely used not only for consumption but also for ritual, medicinal, and calendrical purposes. The emergence of specialized orchards, grafting techniques, and preservation methods during this period marks a critical transition toward systematic horticulture. From late antiquity onward, peach cultivation in China continued to intensify and diversify. Agricultural Treatises such as Qimin Yaoshu document increasingly sophisticated knowledge of propagation, pruning, and orchard management, reflecting the maturation of fruit cultivation systems. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, peach cultivation had reached a high degree of regional specialization, resulting in the formation of distinct ecological zones and varietal groups adapted to diverse climatic conditions. This long-term process generated rich genetic diversity, which later served as the foundation for global peach breeding programs. The outward dissemination of peach began approximately 3000 years ago and followed multiple trajectories shaped by trade networks, political expansion, and cultural exchange. Eastward transmission to the Japanese archipelago likely occurred between the late first millennium BCE and the early centuries CE. Archaeological discoveries, including peach pits from the Makimuku site dated to the third century CE, provided concrete evidence for early cultivation in Japan. Over time, peach has not only integrated into Japanese agricultural systems but also become embedded in religious beliefs and folklore, exemplified by its symbolic role in mythological narratives such as Momotaro. This process has illustrated how biological diffusion was accompanied by cultural assimilation and reinterpretation. Expansion of peach proceeded through the Hexi Corridor into Xinjiang, which functioned as a crucial intermediary zone. Archaeological findings from sites such as Turpan and Shanpula demonstrate that the peach had become a widely cultivated and economically significant fruit in this region by the Han and Tang periods. Documentary evidence, including land registers and contracts, further indicates that peach orchards constituted an independent category of agricultural production. From Xinjiang, peach spread into Central Asia, where oasis agriculture and long-distance trade networks facilitated its further distribution. The presence of peach remains in high-altitude archaeological sites suggests that it was transported as a valuable commodity beyond its natural ecological range. The transmission of peach into South Asia is primarily documented in the Great Tang Records of the Western Regions, which records traditions linking its introduction to the Kushan period (1st-2nd centuries CE). Linguistic evidence, such as the Sanskrit-derived term indicating brought from China,corroborates the Chinese origin of peach in the Indian subcontinent. Notably, the absence of earlier archaeobotanical evidence in India supports the conclusion that the peach was an introduced rather than indigenous species. In West Asia and the Mediterranean, peach became known through its association with Persia, leading to the widespread misidentification of its origin in classical and medieval European knowledge systems. The Latin term malum Persicum (Persian apple) and its derivatives in modern European languages reflect this perception. Classical authors such as Theophrastus and Pliny the Elder provided early descriptions of peach cultivation and dissemination, indicating that by the first century CE, peach had been introduced into the Roman world but was still regarded as a relatively recent and exotic crop. Subsequent agricultural and medical texts in both the Greco-Roman and Islamic traditions contributed to the diffusion of horticultural knowledge, facilitating the integration of peach into Mediterranean agricultural systems. During the medieval period, peach cultivation continued to expand across Europe, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula under the combined influence of Roman and Islamic agronomic traditions. The early modern period marked a new phase of global diffusion, as the peach was introduced to the Americas in the sixteenth century through European colonial expansion. In North America, indigenous communities played a significant role in its rapid dissemination, incorporating peaches into local ecological and cultural networks. By the late seventeenth century, peach had undergone a process of localization, transforming from an introduced species into a widely naturalized and culturally embedded crop. Overall, the global history of peach is characterized by multi-route diffusion, ecological adaptation, and cultural integration. Its spread was not a linear process but rather a complex network of interactions involving migration, trade, and knowledge exchange. As a case study, peach exemplifies how cultivated plants can function as dynamic agents of cross-cultural interaction, re- flecting both the movement of biological resources and the transmission of ideas, technologies, and symbolic meanings. By combining historical and scientific evidence, this study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of crop domestication and global agricultural history, while also providing valuable insights for the conservation and utilization of peach genetic resources in the modern era.
