Abstract: Canyu is a new mid-ripening pear cultivar selected from the seedlings of Red Clapp’s Favorite since 2003 by Changli Institute of Pomology, Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, which with excellent appearance. It was initially selected in 2008 and named 6-29. After regional adaptability testing at three sites including Changli county, Caofeidian district and Botou city in Hebei province from 2015 to 2023, the main economic characters of 6-29 was stable. Canyu obtained the variety patent in July 2020, and was examined and approved by the Hebei Provincial Forest Variety Approval Committee in 2024. In Changli area of Hebei province, the flowers bloom in mid-April, and the flowering period lasts 7-10 days. The fruit development period is around 120 days and can be harvested in mid-August. The tree is vigorous and posture is open. Annual branches are reddish-yellow on the exposed side and straight in shape, short internodes, 3.66cm long. Leaf buds are adnate. Color of tender leaves is green. Mature leaves are elliptic in shape with serrate, long gradually acuate and round base, with 9.13cm in length and 5.14cm in width; the length of the petiole is 3.32cm, and there is no stipule. The number of flowers in each inflorescence is from five to seven. Flowers are pink, ovate, and the relative position of petals is overlap, the position of stamen which with more pollen is lower than that of stigma. Color of anther is fuchsia. The fruit shape is wide-necked pearformed, has green yellow ground color and nacarat over color. The average fruit weight is 325.1g. The fruit peel is smooth with few russeting, fruit dots are dense and medium in size. The color of flesh is creamy white, melting and rich juicy, tastes sour-sweet, fine texture with aroma, no seeds. The soluble solids content is 14.5% with little stone cell and residue. The hardness of flesh is 1.62 kg/cm2. Quality is excellent. Canyu has a high germinating capability and branch development capability. The fruit mainly bears on the short branches, the fruit setting rate is high. The continuous fruiting capacity of branches is strong. After 3 years of planting, it begins bearing. The yield is 3256 kg per 666.7 m2 in seventh year at a certain density (2.0 m×4.5 m). The variety has strong disease resistance and extensive ecological adaptability. When planting, choose a flat and open area where can be watered and drained. The density of planting is (1-3) m × (3.5-4) m. Xuehua, Yali, Huangguan pear are the most suitable pollination trees for it, and the configuration of pollinizer is (4-5):1. The germination rate of bud and branching ability are both strong. The suitable tree shape for Canyu is spindle shaped. In the cultivation, attention should be paid to the management of fertilizer, water and pests. It is suitable for cultivation in Changli county, Caofeidian district and Botou city and other pear producing areas with similar ecological conditions in China.
