A new olive rootstock Tianyuan No. 1 rootstock clone

Abstract: Tianyuan No. 1 olive rootstock clone is a new olive rootstock obtained by using the mixed seeds of CIPRISINO and other greening oil olive varieties brought back from Europe, and it went through individual selection, cutting propagation test, grafting and grafting compatibility test, rootstock adaptability test, rootstock yield and fruit quality test. The plant of this rootstock is tower-shaped, the branches are dense, the growth is vigorous, the leaves are oblong lanceolate, the back of the young leaves is gray and light green, the back of the old leaves is golden, the leaf back is grayish green, the fruit is small and oval, which is purple black when mature, the fruit weight is 1.56 g, the longitudinal diameter is 15.23 mm, the transverse diameter is 13.03 mm, and the fruit shape index is 0.856. The pulp weight is 1.09 g, the fruit core is elliptical, with reticular markings, the fruit stone weight is 0.47 g, the pulp ratio is 69.9%, and the fruit stone ratio is 30.1%. The dry oil content is 40.6%, and the oil quality is good. It begins to sprout in Dazhou township, Yulong county, Lijiang city fromlate February to early March. On March 20, the flowers enter full blossom, and the inflorescence is 25- 35 mm. Generally, there are 10-20 small white flowers. The Hermaphrodite flower rate is 75.2%, the free pollination rate is 7.7%, and fewer fruits drop. Using Tianyuan No. 1 olive rootstock clone as the rootstock to graft other oil olives, the grafting survival rate is high and the compatibility is good, and the interface has no“small foot”at the graft union. Compared with other olive cutting- propagated maturetrees planted in the same period, there is no significant difference in the fruit characteristics and the fruit shapes betweent grafting-propagated and cutting-propagated mature trees. Moreover, the fruit characteristics are significantly improved, the grafting mature trees are more vigorous, the branches grow more robustly, and the fruit yield and olive oil quality are significantly improved. It is suitable for the promotion and application as the olive rootstock in the suitable area of olive in Yunnan province.
