History and prospect of peach breeding in China

Abstracts: Since founding ceremony of the People’s Republic of China, peach breeding has achieved a great progress in China, supporting that 90% varieties in peach industry are independent-bred varieties, which is the highest market share of self-owned intellectual property varieties in bulk fruits. The main objectives of peach breeding in China are high quality, wide adaptability, diversity and prolonging mar- ket supply, and the basic core parents mainly include 18 local cultivars, Japanese cultivars and Ameri- can cultivars; in Bred 683 cultivars, the proportion of hybrid varieties is nearly 2/3, the bud mutant and seeding is 1/3;peach 70%, nectarine 20% and flat peach 10%;white peach 70%, yellow peach 30%;the early, middle and late mature period has achieved 150 days. In the future, peach breeding in China should expand the genetic background, strengthen the exploitation and utilization of local and wild gemplasm, innovate the whole genome selection breeding technology, accelerate the application of intergenetic hybridization and gene editing technology.
