Breeding report of a new late-mature pear cultivar ‘Wanyuli'

Astract:‘Wanyuli'is a new late-mature cultivar with high quality and strong storability, which was se-lected from hybrids of female parent‘Mili'pear and male parent‘Dangshansuli'pear in 2006 for itsbright appearance and excellent sour and sweet flavor. After regional adaptability testing at three sites, including Changli, Luannan, and Jinzhou in Hebei province from 2008 to 2015, it was finally examinedand approved named as‘Wanyuli'in 2015. The tree growth potential of this cultivar is stronger with up-right tree gesture. The germination rate is strong and the branching ability is stronger. The tree is vigor-ous with ramose crown easily controlled which is suitable for close planting with cylindrical and longspindle of tree shape. Annual shoots are reddish brown. The average length of one years old branches is84.40 cm and the roughness of which is 0.946 cm. Leaves are elliptic with entire margin, gradually acuteapex, absent lobe and wedge-shaped of leaf base. The position vegetative bud in relation to shoot ismarkedly held out. It is easy to form flower on medium and short branches, and possesses large numberof flower buds. Flowers are white, and the relative position of petals (5-8) is overlap, the petal shape isovate with more pollen. The average setting rate of the inflorescence forming fruit is 85.00% under thecondition of natural pollination. The fruit shape is extremely globose. The average fruit weight, fruitlength and diameter are 344.13 g, 8.44 cm and 8.66 cm, respectively. The ground color of peel is yellowand the flesh white, crisp, sour and sweet, weakly aromatic, scarce stone cell and small core. The solublesolid content is 13.63%, while the soluble sugar content is 10.78% and the titratable acid content is0.103%, and overall the fruit quality is excellent. The fruit development period is 150-160 d, and can beharvested in early October in Changli area, Hebei province. It begins bearing 2 years after planting andthe productivity per 666.7 m2 is 6 200 kg at 7 years after planting. It has better adaptability and resistantto scab and it has some other good qualities like high yield and good stability. The most excellent proper-ties were its long storage which could be continued to the next May and kept the former flavor under natural condition. It is a good cultivar and suitable for planting inside the Hebei area, and now it also is introduced and cultivated in Henan, Shandong, Liaoning, Xinjiang, Fujian, Guizhou etc, which is expected to be popularized and applied in a wider area.
