A new mid-flowering pollenizer cultivar of kiwifruit ‘Moshan Xiong 5’

Abstract: ‘Moshan Xiong No.5’is a new mid-flowering kiwifruit cultivar, it is belong to Actinidia chinen⁃sis, which was selected from the wild germplasm. Its vines are vigorous, easy flowering and 95%-100% ofbuds break.‘Moshan Xiong No.5’has cyme inflorescence characterizing by 3-5 flowers per cyme and 6cymes per flowering stem. The flower is white, medium size (35 mm×36 mm), 6-7 petals and averaging74.6 anthers per flower (size: 2.19 mm×0.98 mm size). The flowers could produce abundant pollen and thepollen germination rate is c. 75.6%.‘Moshan Xiong No. 5’is a well-qualified pollenizer for most of themid-ripen kiwifruit and early flowering Actinidia deliciosa female-cultivars, such as‘Jintao’‘Jinyan’‘Jinyuan’‘Jinmei’‘Wuzhi No.3’‘Jinxia’‘Cuiyu’‘Huayou’‘Huaguang No.3’‘Tongshan No.5’‘Jinzao’‘Jinfeng’‘Kuimi’‘Lushanxiang’‘Zaoxian’‘Jinyang’‘Taishanghuang’‘Suxiang’‘Yixiang’‘Xixuan No.1’‘M2’‘Xiaya No.1’‘Xiaya No.15’‘Jianke No.1’‘Qianyuan qiucui’‘Chuhong’‘Dong⁃mei’‘Jinmei’‘Xuguan’‘Qinxiang’‘Changan No.1’‘Chuanmi No.1’‘Shixuan No.2’‘Bulunuo’‘Xianglv’‘Xiangma No.6’‘Chenmi’‘Chenhong’‘Xixuan No.2’‘Wancui’‘Miliang No.1’‘Xuxiang’and‘Qinmei’, and it could enhance the fruit-set and fruit quality. In the Wuhan area，budding in late feb⁃ruary, began to flowering in the middle of April, large amount of flowering in late April, petals fall off at theend of April，Flowering period on 12 -15 d.‘Moshan Xiong No. 5’is suitable for cultivation in sub-acidi⁃ty, fertile soil and moisture condition. Planting density could be 2 m×4 m or 3 m×4 m, using the pergolaand T-bar systems, with a single trunk, two permanent leaders and multiple side branches. Rigorous win⁃ter pruning is recommended and the canopy is kept open by summer pruning. Given the conditions of kiwi⁃fruit orchards in China, it is recommended that fertilizer be applied two times a year. The fertilizers in wither combines long-lasting, high-quality manures with appropriate amounts of fast-release chemical fertilizers, while the fertilizers after flowering (30 days) consists mainly of fast-release fertilizers to enhances thefruit development. In december 2014‘Moshan Xiong No.5’had been examined and approved by tree vari⁃ety examination and approval committee of the national forestry department. The climatic region similar asHubei, Hunan, Jiangsu and Sichuan province are suitable for cultivation.
